Colours of Imperial Textiles and Court Regalia in the Qing Dynasty

The significance of colors transcended mere aesthetics in ancient times, especially when adorning members of the royal family and their opulent surroundings, each hue carrying profound meanings linked to governance and presence.

The Colors of Imperial Textiles and Court Regalia in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) opened to the public at the Guardian Art Center in Beijing on Jun 21, 2024. The exhibition features nearly 100 rare Qing Dynasty court garments from the Palace Museum as well as an array of stunning pieces from the Shenyang Palace Museum, with 90 percent of the exhibits on public display for the first time. It aims to highlight the exquisite craftsmanship of traditional Chinese garments.

Jointly curated by Guardian Art Center and the Palace Museum, this exhibition meticulously showcases the intricate connections between specific colors and the authority of ancient rulers, shedding light on their hierarchical understanding, and highlights the preferred colors of emperors and other esteemed royal figures. It delves into how these colors symbolized dignity, sovereignty, and adherence to social protocols during that era. Moreover, this exhibition provides a rare insight into the dying and embroidery techniques developed for royal haute couture, illuminating the historical significance of the textile industry and trade relationships between China and the global community centuries ago.
