Meet Raphael: Masterpieces from Renaissance to Neoclassicism

Exhibition Time: July 10, 2021 - October 14, 2021

In the year 2020, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Raphael’s passing, a series of highly esteemed exhibitions and commemorative events were organized across various European countries, starting from his homeland, Italy. Now, this remarkable global commemorative exhibition makes its way to the distant East, hoping to provide Chinese audiences with the opportunity to appreciate Raphael’s supreme artistic achievements. Curated by the esteemed academician of the Accademia di San Luca in Italy, Claudio Strinati, the exhibition features a total of 69 artworks, with a combined value exceeding a hundred million.

The Renaissance was an era where stars shone brightly, and Raphael, with his extraordinary talent, held an irreplaceable position within the Renaissance, alongside Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Born in Urbino, a cultural hub in central Italy, Raphael was a student of Perugino, one of the most important painters of the Italian Renaissance. Subsequently, his painting skills matured during his time in Florence and Rome.

Compared to Michelangelo’s fervor, Raphael’s works often explore themes of philosophy and religion, presenting fewer tragic conflicts and more harmonious elements. Behind the perfect forms, serene scenes, and gentle colors in Raphael’s artwork lies an immensely moving beauty that humanity aspires to achieve.
