Intimate Encounters: Handscrolls and Albums from the M K Lau Collection

Exhibition Time: November 7 - November 22, 2017

Co-organized by the Guardian Art Center and the Hong Kong-based M K Lau Collection, the exhibition “Intimate Encounters: Handscrolls and Albums From the M K Lau Collection” is launched in November 2017 at the Guardian Art Center. The works from the “M K Lau Collection” are recognized as one of the most valuable private collections of 20th-century Chinese ink painting and calligraphy in Asia. Showcasing rare and superb examples that have been collected over three decades, the immersive exhibition of 50 handscrolls and albums from the 19th to 20th centuries is presented in a custom-designed setting. These high-profile works of art from renowned masters of Chinese painting and calligraphy, including Wu Changshuo, Wu Hufan, Pu Ru, Zhang Daqian, and Lu Yanshao, reflect the extraordinary creativity and diversity of ink art over the past hundred years and showcase the cultural achievements and diverse characteristics of the M K Lau Collection of handscrolls and albums, which opens up a whole new perspective of ink art at the Guardian Art Center. These works are intimate and participatory formats of Chinese ink art – handscrolls are unrolled from right to left on a table, section by section, inviting the viewers to take an interactive journey, while albums are a group of distinct artworks brought together in a cohesive book form. Engaging the viewer with a sense of surprise, discovery, and excitement, the exhibition seeks to highlight the participatory qualities of these art forms.
