Guest Introduction

Victoria Lu (Lu Rongzhi), also known as “Viki Lulu”, was born in Taiwan in 1951. In 1971, she went abroad to study at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles. She then received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Art, with a focus on painting, from California State University in 1973. Beginning in the mid-1970s, she started writing art critique articles for Taiwanese art magazines and newspapers. By the end of 1978, she established an alternative space gallery in Southern California, focusing on conceptual and installation art, where she served as a curator. Later, she became active in the cross-strait art circles through her promotion of public art legislation and the educational expansion of contemporary art in Taiwan. In the 1980s, she was the one who translated the term “curator” into “策展人”. She is one of the first female art critics and curators in China’s contemporary art scene.
