Explore Tibetan Buddhist Ritual Objects from the Qing Palace with Experts from the Palace Museum

From December 16, 2020, to March 14, 2021, the Guardian Art Center in collaboration with the Palace Museum presents the exhibition “A Treasure of Ritual Objects of the Palace Museum.” On December 19th, Wen Ming, the associate research fellow of the Palace Museum, will deliver a lecture at the Guardian Art Center titled “Exquisite Treasures of the Buddha’s Vehicles: A Glimpse into the Tibetan Buddhist Ritual Objects from the Qing Palace.” The lecture will provide an in-depth look at Tibetan Buddhist ritual objects through discussions on their definition, origins, materials, and functions. The session will be structured into three parts: first, “The Definition of Tibetan Buddhist Ritual Objects; second, “The Classification of Tibetan Buddhist Ritual Objects from the Qing Palace: Origins | Materials | Functions”; third, “Appreciation of Selected Masterpieces of Tibetan Buddhist Ritual Objects from the Qing Palace”.

 

Guest Introduction


Wen Ming, a graduate of the School of Archaeology and Museology at Peking University, holds a master’s degree in History. He currently serves as the Chief of the Religious Section and as an Associate Research Fellow at the Palace Museum. His primary research interests include the historical setting of Ming and Qing Dynasties’ court furnishings, Tibetan Buddhist artifacts within the court, and the exchange of Buddhist art between Han and Tibetan cultures. Wen Ming has been dedicated to the conservation, display, and research of religious artifacts from the Palace Museum’s original religious site storerooms, including the Hall for Worshipping Buddha of the Hall of Mental Cultivation (Yangxin Dian), the Garden of Palace of Compassion and Tranquility, and the Qianlong Garden. He has directed nearly twenty projects, involving the loan of the Palace Museum’s artifacts for exhibitions abroad, and has conducted fieldwork on Han-Tibetan Buddhist art in regions such as Tibet, Sichuan, Qinghai, Yunnan, and Gansu. He is the author of one monograph and has published over ten academic papers.
